WESTVILLE

Westville is a town in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and is just west of Durban. It was a formerly independent town however it became part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality in 2002. Westville is situated 10 km inland from the Durban CBD.

In 1848 Jonas Bergtheil chartered a ship and brought out a group of German farmers and their families who settled approximately 12km inland from Durban. The area was named Westville in honour of Martin West, the first Lieutenant Governor of Natal.

The first schools and stores were established in 1877 and were situated near the intersection of Jan Hofmeyr and New Germany Roads.

Westville was a farming area up until the early 1920’s and the charm and natural beauty of this rural area remains to this day.
